Why Cook Sweet Potatoes in Air Fryer

There are two big advantages to cooking sweet potatoes in an air fryer. First of all they will be done much more quickly. You can have air fryer baked sweet potatoes ready in 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the sweet potato. I always am looking for ways to get dinner on the table more quickly!

The second advantage is that you can get a crispy skin. The hot air and high temperature of the air fryer nicely crisps the outside of the sweet potato. It will be crispier than if you use an oven and much, much crispier than if you use an Instant Pot or microwave to cook the potatoes.

Cooking in an air fryer gives you sweet potatoes with a light and fluffy inside and a crusty skin. They go well with a dinner like rib eye steak or pork tenderolin roast.

Selecting Sweet Potatoes

For baking sweet potatoes in an air fryer you will get better results if you pick ones that are all about the same size. This way they will all cook at about the same rate.

Smaller and skinny ones will cook more quickly and big fat ones will take longer. So as you are selecting sweet potatoes for the bins at the grocery store think about how you will be using them!

How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes

1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes

Wash the sweet potatoes well and then dry them off. If you don’t dry them the moisture in the skin will make them steam and they won’t be as crispy. Use a fork to poke holes in them.

2. Oil the Sweet Potatoes

I like to coat the skin of the sweet potatoes with olive oil and sprinkle them with kosher salt. This makes the skin extra tasty once they are baked.

On the other hand some people prefer to cook with an the air fryer in order to reduce the amount of oil that they use. You don’t need the oil, and can skip it without affecting anything except the final texture of the skin and the amount of calories in the side dish.

Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes (3)

If you are going to oil them the best way to do it is to put the oil in a bowl and use your hands to rub it all over the sweet potatoes. Then sprinkle a little salt or other favorite seasoning on.

3. Air Fry the Sweet Potatoes

Put the sweet potatoes in the air fryer basket, being careful not to crowd them. The air fryer works by circulating hot air, so there has to be room for the air to circulate. I can fit 2-4 sweet potatoes in my Omorc air fryer, depending on their size.

Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes (4)

Set the air fryer for 400 F for 30 minutes. There is no need to preheat the air fryer. After 30 minutes check the sweet potatoes. If they squeeze easily they are done and if not put them back in for another 5-15 minutes, depending on their size.

You can also use an instant read thermometer to test the potatoes. They are perfectly done when the internal temperature is 200 F. This is what I usually do since it takes the guess work out of when they are done!

Can I Make These Ahead of Time?

You can make baked sweet potatoes ahead of time, although they won’t be quite as tasty reheated. You can store them covered tightly in the refrigerator for a few days. Then when you are ready to serve them put them back in the air fryer for another 10-15 minutes to reheat them.

Doing this will result in some loss of crispiness in the skin. A better idea is to use leftover or extra baked sweet potatoes to make these twice baked sweet potatoes. These are delicious and a great way to make leftover sweet potatoes taste amazing!

What to Serve With Baked Sweet Potatoes

Baked sweet potatoes make a tasty side dish with almost any meal. You can also mash them with butter and milk and make mashed sweet potatoes.

I usually keep it simple and top the sweet potatoes off with butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar. But adding brown sugar makes them more appealing to kids and is popular too.

FAQs

How long does a sweet potato take in an air fryer? ›

Poke holes in the sweet potatoes, then rub them with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Place them in the air fryer basket and air fry for 18-20 minutes, or until soft. Let the sweet potatoes sit for 5 minutes, before slicing and serving.

Why soak sweet potatoes before air frying? ›

If you'd like, you can soak the sweet potato slices for 30 minutes up to 2 hours before frying to remove excess starch. Personally, though, going through this step didn't make a real difference for my fries. Peels on or off — it's up to you!

Why are sweet potatoes soggy in air fryer? ›

Top tips to make the best ever sweet potato fries in an air fryer. Avoid overcrowding and place them in a single layer. Overcrowding will make them steam and they will become limp and soggy instead of crispy. Flip your fries halfway so that they cook evenly on both sides.

Why are my sweet potatoes not crispy in air fryer? ›

If your air fryer fries are turning out soggy it is likely because you are over-crowding your air fryer basket or using too much oil. For the best results, use just ½ Tablespoon of oil per sweet potato and cook your fries in a single layer so that the air has room to circulate.

Why soak potatoes for air fryer? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

Why do sweet potatoes turn black in air fryer? ›

Why do my air fryer sweet potato fries turn black? Sweet potatoes contain a higher concentration of sugar than standard potatoes, and caramelize as they cook in the air fryer. If you find the fries are darkening too quickly or deeply, cook at a lower temperature, or for a shorter period of time.

What happens if you don t rinse potatoes before putting in to air fryer? ›

Soaking potatoes in cold water can help release some of their starch and yield a crispy fry. That being said, I find it is not necessary when using the air fryer as the air gets hot enough to get them crispy. I have never soaked my potatoes and we get crispy fries all the time. If you want to try it, feel free to.

Why do you put oil on sweet potatoes before baking? ›

The perfect baked sweet potato is simpler than you think! Lightly oiling the skin and sprinkling with a bit of salt makes for crisp skin and a tender inside. This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes before frying? ›

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch. Excess starch can inhibit the potatoes from cooking evenly as well as creating a gummy or sticky texture on the outside of your potatoes. Cold water is used because hot water would react with the starch activating it, making it harder to separate from the potatoes.

Can you put foil in an air fryer? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

Why are my sweet potato fries burning in air fryer? ›

This can be caused by either overcrowding the air fryer basket or adding too much oil to the fries. I recommend cooking the sweet potato fries in a single layer at the bottom of the basket to allow the air to properly circulate and cook the fries. I also recommend not adding more than 1 teaspoon of oil to the fries.

Can you eat sweet potato skin? ›

You can eat sweet potato skin. It's a good source of fiber, a nutrient that may help lower the risk of heart disease and keep you feeling full for longer periods of time. The next time you make a sweet potato dish, whether it's a roasted side dish or a hearty, cozy casserole, leave the peel on.

How long does it take for a potato to get soft in the air fryer? ›

Preheat an air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Rub potatoes with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and parsley. Place potatoes in the air fryer basket. Cook in the preheated air fryer until potatoes are soft, 40 to 50 minutes, depending on potato size.

Why do you soak sweet potatoes before baking? ›

The cold water bath helps rinse the starch off the sweet potatoes so they're a bit more crispy. That said, if you do not have the time, you can still get crispy baked sweet potato fries by using high heat and a little drizzle of olive oil.
